If you’re one of those parents who absolutely dreads laundry day (which is pretty much every day, right?), we empathize. What makes the process slightly more tolerable? Dryer balls! Give ‘em a try and you might just find yourself excited to do laundry again (gasp!). Not only are they a direct replacement for dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener (which are pricey, disposable, and often contain chemicals and fragrances), dryer balls also help lower your energy bill. In addition to fighting wrinkles, they’re non-toxic, hypoallergenic, super absorbent and can speed up drying time by helping circulate the hot air in your dryer. What’s not to love about that?! 

Other than drying your laundry, dryer balls have multiple uses. Here are our five favorite ways to use them: 

1. As Directed.

Dryer balls eliminate the need for dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener. Not only are they just as effective (if not more so!), they are a million times better for the environment. Just pop three or more dryer balls into your dryer and leave them in there to be used load after load! Bonus tip: If you’re worried that the sound of the balls bouncing around in the dryer will destroy your baby’s naptime, fear not! You can layer the balls between the clothes to lessen the noise. In addition, this will help them separate the clothes, circulate the hot air, and dry your threads even faster!

2. With Essential Oils.

If you miss the fragrance from your old dryer sheets, or you just want your clothes to smell Ah-mazing, add 2-3 drops of essential oil to each dryer ball. That’s all it takes to add a fresh and natural scent to your clothes. Lavender, Lemon, Orange, or a combination should do the trick!

3. With Water, Or Safety Pins, For Less Static.

If you do happen to notice some static in your laundry, there’s a simple fix. Before you start the next load, spray your dryer balls with some water to keep clothes from clinging to each other. OR attach a safety pin to each dryer ball (when the pin touches the metal of the dryer, electrons are discharged into the drum and away from your clothes, ultimately reducing the static).

4. As Air Fresheners.

Your wool dryer balls aren’t just for drying laundry. They can also be used as air fresheners throughout your house or your vehicle. Add 2-10 drops of essential oils and tuck them away in a closet or dresser drawer. Then, look forward to a whiff of fresh, natural scent every time you reach for your clothes or linens. 

5. As Toys.

If your kiddos can’t resist playing with your dryer balls, go ahead and let them (but you’ll probably want to buy a second set specifically for your dryer). Dryer balls are the perfect size for tossing around -- and since they’re non-toxic and gentle, no one will get hurt. If your dryer balls get dirty, wash them in warm (not hot!) water with mild detergent, then dry them in -- you guessed it-- the dryer. :)
