We all know the importance of eating our greens–they’re nutrient-dense and full of essential vitamins that can give new life to a sluggish, run-down parent! Why are veggies (specifically rich, green ones) such a nutritional cure-all? It’s thanks to a certain superhero ingredient called Chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the green pigment that gives plants their color and aids in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis–if you remember back to 8th grade science class–allows plants to absorb energy from sunlight so they can grow and release oxygen. Fun fact: without photosynthesis, and therefore, Chlorophyll, there would be no oxygen on earth. And if you’re a human reading this, then you can understand why that’s a big deal. ;)
If you need more convincing, here are a few reasons to go for the green:
#1 Chlorophyll Helps Fight Fatigue.
Known as “nature’s life force,” chlorophyll has a pretty impressive resume. It’s rich in essential vitamins like A, C, E and K, and contains antioxidants and minerals such as magnesium, iron and calcium. Our cells need these micronutrients to function properly, so when we give ‘em what they want, they’ll reward us with clearer thinking, hormone regulation, and the buoyant energy of a toddler (minus the energy crash). ;)
#2 Chlorophyll Boosts Your Blood Health.
Chlorophyll is just plain cool. It so closely resembles the molecular structure of our red blood cells that, research suggests, it can improve our blood’s overall quality. Better blood flow + increased red blood cell count = more oxygen to your cells so your body can excel at all its important jobs like digestion, immune protection, focus, and making it through the day after a sleepless night with your newborn.
#3 Chlorophyll Promotes Healthy Skin.
Got a boo-boo or some complexion congestion? When we support our cells with micronutrients (see #1) and better blood circulation (see #2), our skin is bound to improve. Used topically, Chlorophyll can be helpful for acne and wound healing thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. As with everything in life, results may vary, but if you’re in need of a skintervention, consuming chlorophyll or applying chlorophyll-infused skincare products is worth a shot.
#4 Chlorophyll Helps with BO.
No need to be embarrassed, we all have body odor! Simply put, it’s a result of our bodies’ natural detoxification process–but when sweat interacts with the bacteria on our skin, it can leave you with a stinky situation. Can chlorophyll help with that, too? Yup. Scientists have been studying its natural deodorizing capabilities for a while now. Turns out, Chlorophyll performs a little “green magic” in our bodies by binding to certain odor-causing compounds and helping us eliminate them more efficiently (ie: they end up in the toilet).
#5 Chlorophyll Supports Immune Function.
Another reason to get your chlorophyll fix? Researchers believe it may improve gut health for overall weight management and immunity. Since it’s packed with antioxidants, it naturally lowers inflammation and even promotes liver health (what an overachiever!). The liver is like our body’s HVAC system and, when all’s in order, we’re less likely to get sick and more likely to thrive.
How to get your (chloro)fill:
If it’s been awhile since you’ve prepared a salad, sipped matcha, or consumed anything remotely green, don’t get down on yourself! When you’re tired and ravenous after chasing a kid down all day, filling your plate with fresh green vegetables isn’t only difficult, it’s not always appetizing. Here are three easy ways to add chlorophyll to your diet:
-Coordinate Your Chlorophyll.
At the beginning of each week, prep your greens ahead of time. Pre-slice cabbage, trim asparagus, steam broccoli, or chop up parsley–then store it in the fridge and incorporate it into your meals throughout the week. And since chlorophyll is just as beneficial for your tiny tot, saute some spinach and add it to their next puree or mix it in with their morning eggs. Hey, you could even pair it with the Dr. Seuss book, “Green Eggs And Ham” if you want to make it more appealing!
-Eat a Yummy Gummy.
And if the main reason you don’t eat healthier is because there’s not enough time (we feel ya there!), try taking chlorophyll in supplement form. It’s a healthy habit you’ll actually look forward to every day!
-Guzzle It Down.
Add a handful of greens (spinach, kale, or even cooked zucchini) to your morning smoothie. While it might alter the color of your drink, we promise, it’ll still taste great! Here’s a formula you can’t go wrong with:
- 1 cup leafy greens (spinach or kale)
- 1 cup liquid (water, milk, coconut water, or plant-based milk)
- 1.5 cups frozen fruit (banana, berries, pineapple, orange, apple–choose your own adventure!)
- 1 TBS healthy fat (nut butter, chia seeds, avocado, or coconut oil)
- 1 TBS protein (hemp seeds, rolled oats, or your fav protein powder)
